Hi! Do you have any advice for Saturn transiting your natal placements? Transit Saturn is currently conjunct my natal Moon in Pisces in the fourth house.

—Rain

Hey Rain! Great to meet you. Did you know that my partner’s name is also Raine? Hehe.

Okay, so there’s Saturn transiting your natal placements and then there is Saturn transiting your natal Moon. Saturn transiting the natal Moon is considered one of the more difficult transits in astrology. Saturn transiting other planets? Not so much a worry.

In Vedic astrology, I believe that the period of time Saturn spends transiting not just the sign of your Moon but the two signs adjacent to your Moon sign is called your sade sati. I don’t practice Vedic so I’ll just stick to what I know: Saturn in the sign of your natal Moon is a challenging one because Saturn is the Moon’s nemesis.

The Moon is wet and receptive. Saturn is dry and withholding. The Moon changes every few days. Saturn is slow moving. The Moon finds joy in the third house of connection and intimacy. Saturn finds joy in the twelfth house of isolation. The Moon expresses needs while Saturn expresses denial. Do you see what I’m getting at here?

The only advice I can give for anyone who is currently experiencing Saturn transit their Moon is: rest a lot. Go to bed early and get a full night’s sleep. Get up on time too even when you don’t feel like it. If you can’t get out of bed, then think about the food that you will make for yourself that day.

Whenever I get someone for a reading who is going through a Saturn transit to their Moon, I usually just warn them that this transit is about having less physical energy. Sometimes, that’s all it is. I’ve seen people go through this transit and, yeah, it’s just a bit of loss of motivation and more tiredness than usual. But what is it really about? Saturn transiting the Moon usually brings a period of depression.

Now, I don’t like to tell people that they will be depressed because depression is a clinical term in psychology. I’m not here to make a diagnosis of any sort and definitely don’t have the background for that. The depression that I’m talking about is astrological. Depression is a technical term in astrology that describes a planet’s resting point. That’s why Saturn transits to the Moon usually brings a huge need for rest.

I’m not talking about fake rest either. I’m talking about real rest. I’m literally talking about getting enough sleep.

You can kind of compare Saturn dimming the light of the Moon to an eclipse somewhat. An eclipse is when your light has dimmed. A lot of people think about depression as just an ailment because we use the term clinically now but melancholy and depression, in spirituality, is when you lose your ambition because it has become senseless. You no longer care about the same things as you did before.

The worst thing you can do when you’re depressed is to just keep trying to go through the motions as before even though they make you feel fake and tired.

Saturn transits your Moon. You just don’t care anymore. You’re not interested in learning the same things or talking to the same people. You don’t have new ideas anymore. You really just don’t give a shit and you can’t fake it either because you can’t push through exhaustion by willing up more energy. And you don’t have to. Because there is truth to your depression. You don’t care about the same things anymore and you have to let those things go before you gain more energy again. You have to rest your heart.

Be easy with yourself. Be compassionate. If you make a mistake, tell yourself that it’s not a big deal and that you’re going to be okay out loud.

Give yourself permission to not take care of everything that you have going on. You’re going through a vital change in what you care about.

Your (non-clinical) depression is temporary. You might be depressed because reality has shown you that your old goals need to be put away. You’ll find new goals later but you need to grieve the ones that you lost right now. The things that you have been working towards and caring about and using your heart for feel fake now. Don’t be a hypocrite to yourself. Be honest. If you don’t care about something anymore, then you have a good reason. You need to sit with yourself and find that reason.

And guess what? You’ll literally be okay. Saturn transits everyone’s Moon every thirty years and it’s just your time to let go of your heart’s effort for a while. Don’t work so much right now. You’ll be working hard to care about things that you can’t help but care about for the 23-27 years (depending on what system you use) where you don’t have Saturn transiting your Moon. This time is for you to let it go.

Saturn transiting other natal planets? Not as bad as Saturn transiting the Moon. I’d say that Saturn transiting the Sun can be challenging externally but you still have a lot of energy. It’s just that your life is changing. Saturn transiting the Moon is more difficult. Your life may not be changing that much externally but you’re losing all of your interests. That’s actually harder because you don’t have energy to help you act. That’s why Saturn transiting the Moon forces you to rest.

My only advice about this transit: Be real with yourself. Don’t push through. Rest. Saturn is the Moon’s nemesis in many ways but both planets care about you being the real you. Everything that makes you feel fake will simply fall away. And then you’ll have enough time to regain your momentum.
