Libra and Aquarius have something, one very peculiar thing, in common: they both strengthen Saturn considerably.
Libra is the sign of Saturn’s exaltation. It's the sign of diminishing the self to serve a larger society. Libras love self-examination and they tend to hide their presence because the melancholic planet grows stronger in their sign. When you meet a Libra, you will find that they are brutal with their assessments about reality.
Aquarius is the only sign where Saturn comes home and enjoys triplicity. That’s why Saturn is stronger in Aquarius than it is in Capricorn. Aquarius, just like Libra, loves to examine the self and the social systems that one lives within. They, too, are brutal assessors of truth. They, too, prefer to stand on the sidelines and watch before jumping in to participate. Both Libra and Aquarius, both air signs, can move like ghosts. They witness before they join. They watch. They think. They don’t jump in.
That’s probably why the two make so much sense together.
You have to keep in mind that Libra and Aquarius together can quickly become a reclusive coupling. Get rid of all of your associations about air signs being more social or whatnot. They are not.
Libra and Aquarius love to develop and reside in their own inner world. They have secret jokes with one another. Little peculiar ways of saying various words that only make sense to the other person. Libra and Aquarius build their own little almost insular world together, one that very few can penetrate even when around friendly company. They make their own languages up. They have shorthands and codes of conduct. They develop a Saturnian structure within the relationship, forming a mini society.
The longer a Libra and an Aquarius stay together, the more eccentric both become. Left alone together, they become really weird. Really, really weird.
These are not people who wear normal clothes. These are people who will dress in their favorite anime cosplay outfit and roleplay all day and then wear nothing but underwear the next day. Both Libra and Aquarius give off a vibe that they don’t fully know how to “human.” Both of them are like aliens trying to figure out how to wear a human skin. Awkward? Tremendously. But they don’t notice it, not when they grow used to being around one another.
I think that Libra and Aquarius couples can go together very smoothly, a little too smoothly. In fact, it’s when they come out of the private home and face the sun when problems tend to happen. Their inside jokes are not appropriate to most social situations. People don’t understand what they mean. They discover, sorrowfully, the bare awkwardness that their partnership has shielded them from.
Saturnians feel incredibly naked when they are around other people. They are full of social anxieties. They become demure and anticipate exclusion. But to Libra, Aquarius doesn’t fully count as “another person.” To Aquarius, Libra is just another weird Saturnian. They do not experience full nudity in their relationships with each other. They grow extremely comfortable with each other because they know that the other one will see but not judge.
I think that Libra and Aquairius both like to consider big, heavy topics together. They consider existential or spiritual questions. They start off their mornings reading the news. “Let’s see what our overseers are up to today.” They talk about death and morality and mortality. When they are up for some light entertainment, they watch documentaries about ethnic cleansing and capitalism or they read theories about the end of the world.
They have sarcastic, depressive senses of humor and realistic perspectives about society at large. They don’t express false positivity. Instead, both seek out the truth of the matter. Instead, both are always preparing for the worst that can happen.
What I’m trying to say is that, within outside intervention, a Libra and an Aquarius together can become surprisingly heavy for a couple of air signs. Both Libra and Aquarius are given to melancholy. That’s why this partnership needs community.
I think that this is where the reputation of air signs being super social comes from, actually. Libra and Aquarius, being two thirds of all air signs, are actually quite dark and morbid. They need to be uplifted by solidarity and community to function. That’s why Libra and Aquarius partnerships are rarely alone. They always situate themselves within some existing friend group or social space.
A wider community normalizes this pair of lonely eccentrics. Community reminds Libra and Aquarius that there’s other people out there, that history is unpredictable because people are involved and that there’s little use ruminating all the time in your head. Community reminds them that time matters, that the future is not extinct yet and that today is for making history.
Both Libra and Aquarius hide the light of the Sun. Libra season is the time of solar power weakening. Aquarius season is the coldest season, the time of solar power being at its weakest. In astrology, the Sun represents visibility and presence. Funnily enough, both Libra and Aquarius are personalities who like to give more space to the other person.
I think that Libra is famous for this tendency. Libra is always curious about what you want and need and will try to situate themselves around your desires and wishes. Libras love to be desired and chosen. But Aquarius, too, has this tendency. Aquarius also likes to situate themselves around a stronger personality.
Both Libra and Aquarius are like those people who always like to have a best friend. They’re the good friend, the one who follows their best friend around no matter what. They are those people who are rarely seen alone. Again, that’s probably why air signs have the reputation of being sociable. Libra and Aquarius like to situate themselves around someone else.
When together, they do this for each other. I think that the reason why Libra and Aquarius find themselves in such long partnerships is because they come together and find that, in this partnership, they don’t disappear. They don’t feel like they are being swallowed by their partner. They preserve equality, sometimes in ways that warmer signs would read as distant, because both have been burned by dynamics that caused their diminishment. Both Libra and Aquarius are cautious about disappearing behind their loved one, about making their loved one disappear behind them.
So, this is a beautiful partnership. Libra and Aquarius make each other feel truly seen. Witnessed, not judged. Never judged. Safe to be weird and quiet without the threat of disappearing. They tend to get too morbid when left on their own for too long, yes. And they also love being eccentric together.
