The Sagittarius Coworker

Dec. 5, 2025, 11:15 a.m.

First of all, I want you to think back to what it’s like to get back into the groove of a workplace or a routine after a long trip. You’re jetlagged. Your body doesn’t know where you are yet. You have no idea what is on your calendar because, when you look at your calendar, your eyes cross and you forget what day of the week it is. You have a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm. In fact, you want to catch up with all of your coworkers and tell them about all of the really cool things that you just learned.

You have just glimpsed into the mind of a Sagittarius coworker.

The Sagittarius coworker doesn’t know what day of the week it is. But they are excited. Passionate. Purposeful. They have just decided that their newest mission is the most important and necessary goal in the world and that they will give all of their vitality to it. “By the way, what’s my email again?” the Sagittarius coworker then suddenly asks out of the blue. They forgot it after they lost their phone.

When group meetings take place, the Sagittarius coworker is often preoccupied or missing in action. They just happened to schedule a mysterious other meeting during it and they really meant to be there but they ran into the coolest guy on the train ride back and they couldn’t help but talk his ear off about the book he was holding.

When are we next scheduled to meet? When should we have certain deliverables done by? What is the timeline of what we are planning? The Sagittarius coworker has no idea. They also don’t give a shit and they usually demonstrate this by simply not responding when you ask them these questions.

What is the purpose of our work and how do we keep momentum going? Who is impacted? What can we hope to learn from this experience? These are the questions that the Sagittarius coworker not only shows up for but schedules meeting after meeting to make diagram after diagram exploring and illustrating. Just when you start to think that your Sagittarius coworker is a genius because they have successfully mapped out the entire social flow of your org onto one poster board, they forget how to use a door. You watch flabbergasted as they fumble with the simple latch.

At a retail job, the Sagittarius coworker suffers. Retail is mainly the work of unpacking heavy boxes and putting things that other people will soon pick through and mess up onto shelves. Retail work is also the work of simply ringing people up and standing around. Sagittarius hates, absolutely despises, standing around.

The worst thing that you can possibly have in a workplace, in my opinion, is a bored Sagittarius. The bored Sagittarius will start to do all kinds of inexplicable shit. They will attend night classes to get a degree in something weird. They will start to bring hookups to the store after hours for sex. They will start to scheme up all kinds of different pranks to play on you, their coworker: pretending that everyone is fired upon arrival, locking you in a room while cackling like a maniac, or putting whoopee cushions on all the chairs.

If you have a job that is kind of boring and one of your coworkers is a Sagittarius, be gentle with that person. It’s highly likely that they feel a bit dead inside.

You see, the Sagittarius coworker doesn’t want to make work easy. No, that’s not the point of work—of life. Who wants a predictable and easy life? The Sagittarius coworker wants an interesting life. If they don’t have it, then they’re going to entertain themselves by any means necessary.

What about a Sagittarius who believes in what they are doing? You might think that this Sagittarius doing work that they are passionate about must also be the backbone of their organization. That’s not always the case.

The Sagittarius coworker is not always that aware of what is going on, even when they are involved in work that they have changed their entire life in devotion to. Just because Sagittarius cares about the mission at hand doesn’t mean that their mental jetlag business is suddenly gone. They still stayed up the entire night before reading Hegel. They are still dating three people at once and throwing parties for two hundred people.

Some people might be annoyed by the Sagittarius coworker. That’s fine. Sagittarius doesn’t really mind. They actually enjoy being very annoying because that means that at least you’re paying attention. A lot of us, however, enjoy working with Sagittarius precisely because they are so selectively aware. The Sagittarius coworker never gets on your case about anything. Missing a deadline? Sent the wrong email? Forgot to show up? Sagittarius doesn’t mind. To them, everything is a learning opportunity.

I find that the Sagittarius coworker is most present immediately after a big project is done. They show up wanting to call and chat about what we gleaned from the whole experience. A lot of people get the blues right after a big project is done. Not the Sagittarius coworker. That moment of retrospection is where they tend to shine.

Do you know why the Sagittarius coworker is so freaking casual and scatterbrained? Because they trust you.

“This is fantastic work,” the Sagittarius coworker is frequently heard exclaiming to you right after you thought that you fumbled the most important part of your job while making as many errors as you could. “Oh no, of course it’s not perfect but what is?”

“I think you’re so cool,” your Sagittarius coworker tells you just when you think that you did everything wrong. “You figured out such a smart, groundbreaking way of doing your job. No one’s tried it this way before.” You protest and say that you just did it wrong. “No, there’s no right or wrong,” Sagittarius continues wideeyed. “You just figured out how to do it your own way.”

The Sagittarius coworker has no expectations. They expect nothing to be perfect or even done well the first few times. They come in with the mindset that it’s a group effort, that they will show up when timelines align, and that things will go how they go and we will all learn something at the end. Annoying? For sure. And if you’re the type to stress? Possibly also a much needed breath of relief.
