Objectively speaking, I think that Pisces is the sign that we should all fear the most. Why? Because Pisces can predict not how you feel today or how you felt yesterday but how you will feel tomorrow.
Aquarius happens to be the sign that doesn’t always know how they feel. They know what’s going on. They can describe almost everyone that is happening as a system because Aquarius has spent a lot of time thinking about human behavior and our political moment and tracking different moving parts. But how are they feeling? Aquarius doesn’t always know the answer to that one, not in words.
Pisces doesn’t actually know what is going on most of the time. They’re just not particularly interested in tracking every single event that goes on in the world. They don’t know it’s your birthday and they forgot what you told them an hour ago. However, Pisces can guess how you’re feeling with eerie accuracy and that is what makes them so terrifying to Aquarius. How does Pisces accomplish this miraculous feature? If you ask them, they won’t be able to tell you because their intuition is often hidden from themselves. They think that they’re just really good at guessing.
Aquarius is a very clean communicator. They’re interested in the structures of relationships so they’ll always ask a lot of questions about your expectations and tell you all about theirs. Aquariuses like to create procedures for everything. They have procedures for getting to know each other, getting closer, committing to a structure, moving in, and even getting distance.
As the mutable water sign, Pisces is quite capable of simply fitting into whatever structure makes Aquarius more comfortable. They go with the flow.
Pisces doesn’t always make a lot of concrete demands at the beginning of relationships. They do make demands after getting to know you—small and weird demands like leaving the lotion out for them at night or making sure there’s no cat hair on their pillow. But Pisces isn’t really tracking those small demands which also change day by day. They aren’t actually that interested in those little things that they ask for. They are far more interested in the one big thing that they’re asking for: that you give them your heart, that you care about what they hope for and fear, that you tolerate all of their vices and virtues.
Pisces can put up with a lot of differences between their expectations and who you are. They can tolerate a lot. But they also ask one thing in return—that you tolerate all of them. In return, Pisces also wants to see and know all of you.
In an Aquarius Pisces relationship, Aquarius is often trying to figure the relationship out. Aquariuses are really just people who live life their own way. They don’t always want to be touched. They like to DIY their own relationship structure and talk about ethics a lot. That’s all fine with Pisces even though that’s a little different from the entangled emotional intimacy that they would prefer. They will go with Aquarius’s flow but they are asking for one very important thing back. They ask that Aquarius lets Pisces in enough to see their flaws.
In a relationship, Pisces never performs strength. In friendships and wider community, Pisces often feels like they have to act stronger than they are. In an intimate relationship, Pisces is very forthcoming about their vulnerabilities and they expect the same from you.
This ask that Pisces makes is extraordinarily interesting to Aquarius. It’s challenging stuff. It’s good stuff but that doesn’t mean that it’s not hard. You see, Aquarius is not like Pisces. They take things slow because they have trouble letting anyone see them at their worst. In partnerships, especially serious ones, Aquarius wants to act their best. That’s one of the reasons why Aquarius can become distant suddenly, because they want the people who they care about to see their highest ethics and best self and no one can be that best self all the time.
Aquarius forgets to call Pisces at an hour when they suggested they would be available. Usually, this is okay but today it is not. Pisces cries. It’s not really about the phone call. It’s truly not. A Pisces who cries is not the end of the world and they know that a missed phone call is normal. What Pisces wants is the intimacy of you seeing them in their tears, of you witnessing the insecurity that they feel not everyday but on the days when they are most in love.
If Aquarius launches into a lengthy discussion about relationship expectations at this sensitive point, Pisces will look at them as though they have truly lost the plot. If Aquarius starts to talk about how they can improve their communication style, Pisces will sigh wearily and perhaps even fall asleep.
Boring! Pisces is looking for emotional intimacy, not a discussion about what is right or wrong. They miss you when you don’t call. Isn’t that so deeply romantic? Doesn't that make you want to fall in love with them all over again? That is the point that Pisces is trying to make with their tears.
Pisces wants their lovers to see their most tender and most raw selves. Pisces defines the erotic through the lens of mercy. They rarely hold grudges and they feel that the sweet catharsis of being gentle with one another’s forbidden desires is the best thing in the world. They can talk about humanity at large with Aquarius, sure, but they want to feel something rare.
In my opinion, how well a relationship between an Aquarius and a Pisces functions really depends on the Pisces. There is a small tendency for Aquarius to harbor a nagging feeling of owing something to Pisces all the time. This happens because Aquarius thinks about desire in terms of expectations while Pisces thinks of desire in terms of wishes. This also happens because Aquarius cares a lot about being a good person and can hold onto a lot of guilt while Pisces usually uses forgiveness as a path to closeness (forgiveness can activate a lot of guilt feelings).
What usually helps an Aquarius Pisces relationship work better is that Pisces forgives Aquarius less, that they have more expectations from the beginning. Pisces finds it hard to come up with firm expectations because they’re just so tolerant. However, constant flexibility and no expectations can actually bring up a lot of feelings about relationship debt in Aquarius.
When Pisces expresses their expectations early, when they are clear about what they desire, Aquarius can relax. Aquarius is the type who stops beating themselves up only when you hold them accountable.
Most of the time, Aquarius and Pisces get along very well. When two people have Sun signs which are adjacent, they tend to share a Mercury or a Venus placement here or there. Yes, Aquarius can find Pisces to be intimidating. They might feel a sense of indebtedness in the relationship unless that is addressed. Pisces can read Aquarius better than Aquarius can read Pisces. But Aquarius also challenges Pisces to set some expectations. That means that Pisces can give Aquarius something that they didn’t know how to name: quiet attention in their most private moments. It also means that Aquarius can help Pisces comprehend what it is that they want.
