If you live in New York, then you’re probably pretty excited about what could be New York’s first socialist mayor. Zohran Mamdani is running on a platform that is purely about affordability: rent freeze, affordable housing, free transportation, and paying for all of it by taxing the wealthiest 1% of New York. I've been feeling a lot of political hope because of him.
Mamdani is the candidate that makes landlords scared and he could actually win even in Trump’s America. He’s beating Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor who resigned in disgrace, in some polls now.
Recently, Co—Star Astrology released a screencap of Mamdani’s full birth info according to Mira Nair, his mom: October 18, 1991 at 1:15 AM in Kampala, Uganda. Now, in the western system a birth time of 1:15 AM gives Mamdani a rising sign of 0º0” Leo which is…that’s a bit too close to call. He could be a Cancer rising if the birth time was rounded by just a minute. That would make his Moon in Aquarius his chart ruler and place his Sun in the fourth house. It would also put both benefics in the third house of community and connection. Leo rising would make his Sun in Libra his chart ruler.
Instead of tinkering with Mamdani’s birth time and possible rising sign, I’m going to go ahead and just do a bazi chart analysis for him instead.

Beautiful and Romantic
For this bazi chart analysis, I actually talked to Mamdani’s toughest political critic: a cynical gay who he happened to go to high school with. If you’re in the queer community, you know that there’s a difference between the positive gays who join GSA and all that jazz and the cynical more emo type gays who just stick to themselves and their friends. This gay is the latter type and those people tend to be the most loving people you’ll find but also the toughest people politically.
“I’m a cynical gay and even I liked him,” the self identified cynical gay said. “Everyone did. He always said hi to everyone but it came from an authentic place. Even my friend who was a Kpop stan liked him. I’ve followed him his whole career and I’ve always been very impressed. He’s a respectful and good kid.”
Mamdani’s day pillar, the pillar that represents him, is Metal Rooster. If you know anything about bazi, then you’ll know that Metal Rooster is an extremely significant pillar.
The Rooster is the beauty of the Chinese zodiac, the charmer and the courtesan. It’s the shiny phoenix—a beautiful, beautiful bird painted in the colors of sunset. That’s chicken. In the myth of the zodiac, Rooster worked together with Goat and Monkey in collaboration to build a raft to help them finish the race on the Jade River. But Rooster was the leader in that trio. Rooster is a charismatic and beautiful leader. Metal Rooster is a blessed bird because it’s a Rooster that can show its brilliance to the world on a public stage.
Metal Rooster sits on its own Prosperity Star. Prosperity Star is someone who has an ancestral spirit who ensures their success and protects them from all dangers. Metal is firmly rooted in Rooster so it initiates things, has confidence, and makes friends and allies. Metal Rooster also sits on its Red Peach Blossom star, a star that’s sometimes thought of as charisma but is actually about just having a good heart. Red Peach Blossom is someone who marries for love and operates from a place of love. Mamdani is like a Disney princess. He's extremely pretty but also good hearted. He's a romantic. He believes in himself just like all those Disney princesses tell us to do.
You know who else was Metal Rooster day pillar? Marilyn Monroe and Zhuge Liang.
Marilyn Monroe is self explanatory. The charisma, the intelligence, the pure heart. She was also extremely well read. Zhuge Liang was Liubei’s strategist during the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He was responsible for governing the State of Shu after Liubei’s death. Zhuge Liang is famous for being fair but mostly for being really fucking smart. He invented the use of natural gas for cooking, built a river project 2000 years ago that is still in use today, and had the entire Shu state producing beautiful silk brocades. He was responsible for ushering a small territory under attack from all sides into an economic golden age. He did this by ruthlessly rooting out corruption and promoting policies that work for the people.
Zhuge Liang was a really smart guy and he was most known for removing corrupt politicians while confronting tyranny. When Zhuge Liang fought against Cao Cao but didn’t have enough arrows to win the battle? He rode out to Cao Cao’s camp in boats full of scarecrows and straw on a foggy day. Cao Cao’s soldiers shot all of his arrows into the straw boats and Zhuge Liang reversed course, bringing them back. He stole his enemy’s arrows.
Under Zhuge Liang’s rule, even Shu’s worst enemies wanted to trade with Shu and did so in the underground market. Zhuge Liang was so good at governing that some people still worship him as a deity even today. I’m just saying. Some people worship JFK like a Jesus deity too but behind every powerful man is a smart woman. Behind JFK? Marilyn Monroe.
That’s Metal Rooster day pillar: Marilyn Monroe, Zhuge Liang, and Zohran Mamdani. Extremely smart and charismatic leaders who bring all types of people together.
But you know what also indicates intelligence in Mamdani’s chart? His Direct Resource month command and the Rat in his hour pillar.
Mamdani is really smart
Mamdani is a Bronx Science kid. Bronx Science is one of those impossible to test into New York public schools kind of like Stuyvesant or Hunter College High School. That means that he was a smart kid who grew up under a lot of academic pressure. When you watch his rap videos that he did with HAB as Young Cardamom, you’ll notice that he dresses in a graduation gown and cap. He gives off a certain well educated and scholarly energy. Mamdani is coming into the mayoral race after having worked on everything from housing to transportation as assemblyman.
This guy is really, really smart.
Mamdani’s month pillar is Earth Dog. Since Mamdani’s day master is yin metal which is like a jewel or gemstone, Earth Dog is like the cave that fosters him into being. That means that his month command, his strongest influence from his environment, is mother spirit. If he is a gemstone, then the cave that formed him looms large and close by.
Prepared, cultured, educated. That’s mother spirit people. They’re strategists. They remember where they come from and they absorb all of the education that their environment has to offer because they are observant.
People who have mother spirit month command are always prepared. They do research. They learn. They study and they read. This influence gives Mamdani his nerd flair. He’s not talking out of his ass ever. He’s done the research and he can give you the context.
But mother spirit isn’t just about intelligence. Mother spirit is about parental influence. Direct Resource, or direct mother spirit, is about learning from your elders and having that parental support. It’s about staying attached to where you come from.
Usually, people with strong Direct Resource month command have extremely powerful parents. Mamdani’s dad teaches Africana studies at Columbia University. He’s a renowned postcolonial academic. His mom is Mira Nair, a very famous filmmaker and storyteller. She did Mississippi Masala and once turned down Harry Potter to work on The Namesake. Nair put Zohran in a music video for Disney’s Queen of Katwe, a song about Kampala which was the city in Uganda where Mamdani was born. They have high hopes for him. They gave Mamdani the middle name Kwame after the first president of Ghana post independence.
I think that Direct Resource month command is why Mamdani pops out looking so young and charming but then does things in a way that makes you feel like he has decades of experience. He has educational support and moral support from his parents. He listens to his elders. He’s the kind of guy who calls his mother and actually listens to her, the kind of guy who visits old people and listens to what they have to say. That type of person is able to do things in a way that is more thought out than everyone else because they receive the experience they need from an older generation as support.
Of course, Rat in Mamdani’s hour pillar also gives him Academic Star and Literary Star. Academic Star is an ancestor who makes sure that you do well on tests academically. Mamdani probably did very well on his SATs and other tests. Literary Star is a nobleman star that gives you help and mentorship intellectually. People with this star have a strong intellectual or philosophical side and they are able to receive help when they do things such as writing, research, and scholarship.
Mamdani’s entire chart screams scholar. He’s here to learn and read and absorb. This is someone who is highly observant and someone who comes from an academic family. This is someone who reads a lot of books and has loving parental support. He is mother spirit. He is connected to the place where he comes from.
Time to shine
The thing is, Xin Metal always fights with its mother spirit a bit because Xin Metal’s mother spirit is earth. Xin Metal is sharp and shiny metal which likes to break free and become useful. Mamdani has such a strong family influence in his chart so he should be someone who is also very ambitious on account of wanting to break free from that influence and shine. Jewels want to shine. They don’t want to take in the cave that nurtured them forever.
Xin Metal is quite willful. Having strong mother spirit means that Mamdani calls his mom but being Xin Metal means that he will like to spar with her with his words. Xin Metal is super expressive, creative, and has the gift of talk. Mamdani’s Xin Metal is polished before it is next to the water in Rat hour. He likes to talk and invent and express. Xin Metal will always try to do its own thing rather than follow the footsteps of either parents.
Dog month and Goat year: both of these earth branches hold some fire, especially Dog which is fire’s storage. For metal, fire is pressure and ambition. However, Dog and Goat hold onto yin fire which represents Mamdani’s ability to meet challenges. His metal has been nurtured by earth/mother for a long time, is polished by being next to water in the hour and is ready to shine. He needs Bing Fire or direct sunlight to do so. Xin Metal’s greatest desire is actually to shine. It needs to be put into the limelight because it’s a piece of jewelry.

Seven Killings is the fighter who tries to overcome injustice. That means that the actual internal experience of being Mamdani right now is about meeting challenges and confronting powerful people just like a warrior. He enters a Snake ten year luck pillar in about eight years.

Now, Mamdani doesn’t have to worry about the Ding Fire or Seven Killings challenges in his current luck pillar too much. He can take Seven Killings not just because he’s a stubborn, rooted metal day pillar but because he’s surrounded by earth/mother. He’s able to take any challenges and turn them into lessons because he has elder support and because he is always poised to learn. Mamdani has no wealth. He isn’t greedy, he doesn’t make rigid plans, and he’s not controlling. While this may make him a bit reckless or feel out of control at times, he’s also stubborn as hell and he listens to his mother. He has parental support. He can take Seven Killings, challenge powerful people, and win.
The reason why having little wealth eases Ding Fire’s pressure is because trying to control everything usually makes your problems worse. That’s like wood giving fuel to the fire. What you need to use Seven Killings is mother spirit because mother spirit is your ability to ask for help. Mamdani is taking on the challenge of confronting powerful people right now but he’s not going to make his own problems worse. He asks for help and he doesn’t try to preserve his own sense of control. He does his research and he builds strong relationships with elders. That’s the best way to take on challenges, the best way to take on Seven Killings spirit.
Seven Killings sharpens Mamdani’s ambition. It makes him into a fighter, a challenger. He’s currently in his decade of fighting and 2025 makes him shine. In eight years or so, he will shine fully. His future is literally incredibly bright.
