I recently wrote an article about the place that gives you hope. My theory: the house that exalts your chart ruler in your natal chart is the place that gives you hope. If you want, you can go read that article here.
Of course, everything is astrology is mirrored. If your chart ruler is exalted in one place in your chart, then that same chart ruler will fall in the opposing house. A planet that is in fall in astrology is sometimes called a depressed planet or a planet that has suffered a humiliation.
This is pretty much the opposite situation as exaltation. Planets in fall suffer loss. They’re like Artie in The Sopranos instead of Ben Kingsley. Artie is a character who feels like he’s losing everything all the time. He’s losing his restaurant, his wife, control, etc, etc, etc. He has this downwards trajectory until he reaches his lowest point and then rediscovers his love of cooking.
Planets in fall show us the flip side of hope. They show us where we experience the most disappointment. They’re afraid to hope. They don’t want to get their hopes up so they tend to discount themselves and their own efforts. But planets in fall are extremely persistent because they’re actually not running on hope. Just like Artie finding his dad’s cookbook, they help us find the most meaning because they don’t have idealism. They deal with what’s actually on the ground.
Again, you have all twelve zodiac signs in your natal chart. You also experience the seven planets transiting all twelve signs at some point. That means that you will personally experience what it’s like for your chart ruler to be in fall.
And that’s gonna be the place that teaches you how to grieve. Let's see what that’s like for all twelve rising signs.
Aries rising is ruled by Mars and Mars is in fall in Cancer. That’s Aries rising’s fourth house of history, land, and family. Aries risings tend to place a lot of hope on future accomplishment and feel a lot of disappointment over history. Staying still and in place can help Aries rising find their persistence.
Taurus rising is Venus and Venus falls in Virgo. That’s Taurus rising’s fifth house of pleasure. Now, Taurus rising is a little weird because Venus is in fall in its house of joy for them. But Taurus risings grieve though pleasure. They tend to be skeptical about love affairs and they learn how to persist through play.
Gemini risings are Mercurial and Mercury is in fall in Pisces. That’s Gemini rising’s tenth house of public accomplishment and impact. Gemini risings actually feel the most disappointment with authority figures and with ideas around success. They tend to feel the most fear when they think about what they have to accomplish.
Cancer risings are Moon ruled. The Moon falls in Scorpio which is Cancer rising’s fifth house of pleasure. Just like Taurus rising, Cancer risings grieve using pleasure and learn how to persist through play. They examine their own insecurities through love affairs.
Leo risings are Sun ruled and the Sun falls in Libra. That’s Leo rising’s third house of connection and kinship. Leo risings have a lot of social anxieties and fear social judgment. Connection and intimacy teaches Leo risings how to grieve.
Virgo risings are Mercury ruled and Mercury is in fall when placed in or transiting through their seventh house. That’s why Virgo risings are most disappointed with other people, especially when those people do not rise to the level of competence that Virgo risings expect. Virgo risings also feel a lot of desire to help people because they often feel disappointed by people.
Libra risings are built different. They are Venus ruled and their chart ruler is in fall when placed in or transiting through their twelfth house of isolation and rest. Libra risings need to sleep a lot. That’s also how they process loss. They feel the most fear about being left behind by other people.
Scorpio risings are Martians and Mars is in fall in their ninth house of Cancer. Scorpio risings tend to be very skeptical or resistant ideologically because they don’t really like to believe things that other people believe. They are afraid of being disappointed spiritually or politically.
Sagittarius rising is ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter is in fall in Capricorn. That’s Sagittarius rising’s second house of resourcing and food. Sagittarius risings are often afraid to cook in front of other people because they don’t want to be judged for eating. They also feel fear when they need resources of their own because they are afraid of being selfish or controlling.
Capricorn risings are ruled by Saturn which is in fall in their fourth house of home. Just like Aries rising, Capricorn rising doesn’t like to stay cooped up in the home. They’re afraid of getting stuck in one place and they are most disappointed by history.
Aquarius rising is also ruled by Saturn but Saturn is in fall in their third house of connection and kinship. Just like Leo rising, Aquarius rising is really awkward and fears not being able to connect to people. They fear getting too involved in other people’s business but they need to feel connected before they are able to mourn.
Pisces risings are Jupiter ruled and Jupiter is in fall in their eleventh house of friendship. Like Taurus rising, Pisces rising is a little weird because their chart ruler is in fall in its house of joy. Pisces risings are often disappointed with friend groups or big movements and causes. They are skeptical about big groups.
And there you have it. Yes, you have a place or area of life that gives you hope. You also have a place or area of life that teaches you how to feel disappointment and just keep going. Everyone will experience the planet that represents them in their charts moving through the place that teaches them how to process loss at some point in their lives. I’m actually experiencing this exact transit right now since I’m Aquarius rising and my chart ruler, Saturn, has ingressed to Aries.
What do you think? What is your rising sign and chart ruler? Where does it suffer its fall in your natal chart and what do you think about the area of life described by that house?
